Among the 4 Emperors past and present he sticks out as the tiniest, most normal-sized by far, the others being numerous degrees of inhumanly proportioned. Real to his epithet, Shanks has definitely red hair: generally portrayed across media as deep-crimsonish. Worthwhile of note is that, distinctively among all characters yet seen, even ones with equivalent hair tone, Shanks' hair is the sole one filled with grayscale in the black-and-white manga (instead of inked black or left white). His first-seen hairdo was a directly, middle-parted one kept loosely down to nape length, with much shorter (at eye level), curtained bangs in the front.  In later on appearances (at 10 years older), he is shown with slightly longer hair, wavier and more slicked back than prior to except for some couple of hairs he lets fall down the sides of his face, pushed further sideward than stated prior bangs.

Otherwise, his outfit constantly includes a sweeping long, sleeveless black cape with a high collar (in the anime bearing a lighter, gray within), and under it a simple, white t-shirt half-buttoned up, exposing the middle of his chest and upper abs. Additionally, Shanks is constantly seen wearing trousers cut below the knee, gathered halfway up the shin. Initially (Chapter 1) the pair was a slightly loose, plain-brown one with golden buttons down the external leg sides, and with a red sash around his waist to keep his t-shirt tucked within. In the future, he is seen wearing a various, mildly baggier set of pants with a green-yellow, indiscernible flower pattern (now revealing plenty leg hair), and his t-shirt is excluded of his sash, which is now revealed holding his saber at his Click for more right side.
